Jonathan Gennick is an independent consultant specializing in Oracle technologies. He got his start with relational database systems in 1990, first working with Ingres, and then later with Digital's Rdb software. In 1994, he made the leap to Oracle and hasn't looked back since. He spends much of his time providing database administration services, as well as server-side PL/SQL support, to clients.
When he isn't working with Oracle, Jonathan can often be found writing about it. Since 1997, he has been involved with a number of writing projects. His second book, Oracle SQL*Plus, The Definitive Guide, was published in 1999. I can start by picking up and reading something in the middle and get something out of it- and then go back and read contents, or look things up in the index. The paintings come from a famous botanist called Basilius Besler (even his name sounds like some of the Latin names for plants) who apparently spent sixteen years creating plates of the many many plants in a famous garden from way back when.
The text is quite interesting and the paintings are great, and on the opposite page it gives you the common and Latin name for each plant (which brought back a few memories).
While I'd only advise this for plant lovers, for me this book served as a trip down memory lane and I'm happy my husband picked it up.. I've read quite a few title in the this genre (early aviation in Canada and Alaska), and this is one of the best I've come across. 90% of this book is full page, black & white pictures of Lackawanna steam engines and the cars they are hauling.
