The Eye of the Prophet is a luminous collection of Gibran's writings translated from Arabic into French and now into English. Here the author is the poetic, philosophical moralist, grounded in Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity, seeking the best in people, refusing to separate humankind from the natural world. Ordinary work and life, he says, has the potential to be inherently noble, if we can learn to enact our affairs with the sublimity of nature's creations.
Gibran’s descriptions celebrate the dignity and freedom of animals, birds, the seasons, oceans, clouds. His is a poet’s eye; he abhors the “tentacles of government” and calls on citizens to question all ideologies. Who can be successful in writing a book on a topic most of us try to avoid but all have a stake in, death? Allison, a master biblical historian, reminds us, believer or non-believer, conservative or liberal, that our responses to death have always throughout ages shaped how we live. Hung like a horse comes to mind. I see that this one is the 3rd of a series, but having never read the first two or anything else by Ms. I had great expectations for this book, but perusing it, it just was ho-hum. There is certainly good reason why this work was reprinted in no less than ten editions. This author is one of those that doesn't tire you out with long, scholarly sentences. with too many rules, restrictions and regulations, but until I read this book I didn't see just how bad--and absurd--things have become.
